Let your imagination take flight…

Light, delicate, and full of summer magic, this enchanting embroidered dragonfly combines translucent painted wings with richly textured stitching to create a beautifully dimensional little creature that seems ready to hover gently above the garden flowers. During this single-session class, we will create wired organza wings painted in two softly blended shades before assembling them around a wonderfully tactile dragonfly body worked using puffy couching techniques for added texture and sculptural form.

Like the other projects in this Summer Garden series, this class is designed as a creative “stash-buster.” No kit is required; instead, students will receive full instructions together with a suggested materials list, encouraging you to experiment with your own fabrics, threads, paints, and embellishments to create a dragonfly entirely unique to you. Perfect for confident stitchers who enjoy raised embroidery, mixed media techniques, texture, colour, and expressive hand stitching inspired by the beauty of the summer garden.

Suitable for confident beginners and experienced stitchers alike, these classes assume a basic familiarity with surface embroidery techniques and working with fabric stretched tautly in a hoop or frame. As these are creative “stash-buster” projects, students are encouraged to dive into their own embroidery treasures and experiment playfully with colour and texture. A varied selection of lightweight threads such as stranded cottons and/or silks, fine pearl (perlé) cottons, narrow silk ribbons, and embellishments including beads, sequins, and possibly metal threads will open up wonderful creative possibilities throughout the series. Confident beginners are very warmly welcomed, though you may find yourself delightfully tempted to supplement your stash with a few lovely new additions along the way.

Students will need a small embroidery hoop or frame (a hands-free hoop or stand is highly recommended if available), together with sharp embroidery scissors, pins and a pair of curved tweezers for handling and shaping embroidery elements.. As these are creative stash-based projects, students are also encouraged to have a healthy embroidery stash to hand, including lightweight threads, ribbons, beads, sequins, and other favourite embellishments. For projects involving wired elements, students will additionally require some fine white paper-wrapped wire (approximately 32 gauge).

  • What a Brilliant Experience!

    I've just finished the class portion of Kelley's Goldwork Sampler and I'm really sad it's over. I have done a number of 2 day classes in this technique over the last few years, but I found working in this manner (Zoom classes at fortnightly intervals over nearly a year, with video clips of the techniques available through the portal) meant that if you found there was something that didn't make sense later, you could check back, or more importantly, ask a question at the next lesson. I've picked up on a lot of tiny things that have led to some very satisfying improvements in the quality of my work, learned some really useful techniques, and got links to sources of otherwise hard to find equipment. (Especially useful as I'm located down under in New Zealand.) Thank you Kelly for a wonderful experience - I had a blast!
