Add some swish to your Christmas decorations and learn how to make basic tassels and cords to decorate your tree, table or gift wrapping.

Join Sarah for this Stashbuster class to transform all those leftover threads into fabulous tassels using your embroidery equipment. We'll start with some hand twisted cords so that we can hang up our tassels, and then look at ways of making different sizes of tassels and how different threads and finishes can change the look before making a string of tassels that makes the perfect garland addition for your tree.

This class is ideal for beginners but everyone is welcome to join whatever skill level.

ONE SESSION

We'll start off by making simple hand twisted hanging cords, before looking at methods for making and wrapping a soft tassel of various lengths and fullness. Lastly we'll look at making a string of small tassels.

requirements:

STANDARD EQUIPMENT

Embroidery scissors, fabric scissors (optional), an embroidery hoop (any size), preferably in a seat frame or barrel clamp. A comb. Helpful but optional: Knitting needle, PVA glue, cord winder, a second barrel clamp/seat frame with hoop, empty thread spools.

SPECIFIC MATERIALS

Embroidery thread from your stash: stranded cottons, perle threads and wools can all be used. You'll need a reasonable quantity of thread to make each tassel.
Strong sewing thread (e.g. Gutermann Extra Strong)

  • What a Brilliant Experience!

    I've just finished the class portion of Kelley's Goldwork Sampler and I'm really sad it's over. I have done a number of 2 day classes in this technique over the last few years, but I found working in this manner (Zoom classes at fortnightly intervals over nearly a year, with video clips of the techniques available through the portal) meant that if you found there was something that didn't make sense later, you could check back, or more importantly, ask a question at the next lesson. I've picked up on a lot of tiny things that have led to some very satisfying improvements in the quality of my work, learned some really useful techniques, and got links to sources of otherwise hard to find equipment. (Especially useful as I'm located down under in New Zealand.) Thank you Kelly for a wonderful experience - I had a blast!
