Dance beneath the moonlight…

A gentle companion to our radiant embroidered sun, this beautifully atmospheric moon motif captures the quieter magic of summer evenings and silver-lit skies. During this single-session class, we will explore the technique of silk ribbon stretched smoothly over raised padding to create a softly sculptural crescent moon, embellished with delicate beads that shimmer like stars in the night sky. Alongside this, we will stitch a whimsical little cloud using stem stitch and seed stitch — because even the loveliest gardens need a little night-time rain.

Like its sunshine counterpart, this is also a wonderfully creative “stash-buster” project. No kit is required; instead, students will receive full instructions together with a suggested materials list, encouraging you to delve into your own collection of ribbons, beads, threads, and embellishments to create a moon uniquely your own. Ideal for confident stitchers who enjoy texture, sparkle, experimentation, and expressive hand embroidery.

Suitable for confident beginners and experienced stitchers alike, these classes assume a basic familiarity with surface embroidery techniques and working with fabric stretched tautly in a hoop or frame. As these are creative “stash-buster” projects, students are encouraged to dive into their own embroidery treasures and experiment playfully with colour and texture. A varied selection of lightweight threads such as stranded cottons and/or silks, fine pearl (perlé) cottons, narrow silk ribbons, and embellishments including beads, sequins, and possibly metal threads will open up wonderful creative possibilities throughout the series. Confident beginners are very warmly welcomed, though you may find yourself delightfully tempted to supplement your stash with a few lovely new additions along the way.

Students will need a small embroidery hoop or frame (a hands-free hoop or stand is highly recommended if available), together with sharp embroidery scissors, pins and a pair of curved tweezers for handling and shaping embroidery elements.. As these are creative stash-based projects, students are also encouraged to have a healthy embroidery stash to hand, including lightweight threads, ribbons, beads, sequins, and other favourite embellishments. For projects involving wired elements, students will additionally require some fine white paper-wrapped wire (approximately 32 gauge).

  • What a Brilliant Experience!

    I've just finished the class portion of Kelley's Goldwork Sampler and I'm really sad it's over. I have done a number of 2 day classes in this technique over the last few years, but I found working in this manner (Zoom classes at fortnightly intervals over nearly a year, with video clips of the techniques available through the portal) meant that if you found there was something that didn't make sense later, you could check back, or more importantly, ask a question at the next lesson. I've picked up on a lot of tiny things that have led to some very satisfying improvements in the quality of my work, learned some really useful techniques, and got links to sources of otherwise hard to find equipment. (Especially useful as I'm located down under in New Zealand.) Thank you Kelly for a wonderful experience - I had a blast!
