My Story:
Why do you enjoy hand embroidery?
I love the combination of creativity and the need to get things technically correct. I find I can lose myself in it and forget any other worries.
What’s the first thing you can remember stitching?
An owl on very large canvas with a plastic needle (I think I was about 4 years old). My mum was doing some Jacobean crewel work and I wanted to join in.
What are you currently working on?
The Sugar and Spice Advent House. It’s a big project - but I like having one large project on the go at any one time. It also includes lot of different stitches and some new techniques so it’s constantly interesting. I confess to a lot of unfinished projects too.
What is on your wishlist of stitching projects?
A portrait of my grandmother in blackwork, the mad hatter from Alice in Wonderland in stumpwork and more box making. I’ve also got a slight obsession with learning traditional smocking for some reason. I think I’ve got at least 10 years worth of ideas….
What else can you tell us about yourself?
I also enjoy cooking but I’m not as obsessed with it as embroidery!
Learning at the Stitch Sanctuary
What brought you to Kelley’s online class(es) in the first place?
I first met Kelley doing classes in Bristol in person so I knew what to expect and then the designs are so tempting.
What online cours(es) have you taken at the Stitch Sanctuary?
Goldwork Sampler, Sugar & Spice Advent Calendar
How do you find the online learning experience here?
It’s excellent. It’s so useful to be able to look back at the videos and pictures when you just want to check a detail after class.
Zoom works really well (who would have thought before Covid that embroidery classes online would be so good?) and it’s so nice to be able to attend an embroidery class in the week after work. The WhatsApp groups are also a great way for the group to keep in touch between classes.
What would you say to someone thinking of booking onto a Stitch Sanctuary class for the first time?
Please join us - it’s a great way to work on a project with lots of support and make new stitching friends.
