My Story:
Why do you enjoy hand embroidery?
Hand embroidery is my passion- I have been stitching since I was a child. I love creating embroideries and the satisfaction it gives me.
What’s the first thing you can remember stitching?
The first thing I stitched is a sampler. My grandma taught me, it’s mainly Cross Stitch on a linen background. I think I was 10!
What are you currently working on?
I’ve always got lots of kit ideas floating around in my head! I’m currently working on a second coastal scene inspired by the beautiful North Yorkshire coastline- close to my home.
What is on your wishlist of stitching projects?
I love working on larger projects, especially if it involves lots of stitchers.
How long have you been teaching?
25 Years
What types of embroidery do you like teaching?
Crewelwork/Freestyle Stitches
Canvaswork
Blackwork
Goldwork
Whitework
Stumpwork/Raised Embroidery
Thread Painting
Appliqué
Embroidered Boxes
What else can you tell us about yourself?
I have written two embroidery books: RSN Embroidered Boxes, published by Search Press and Ecclesiastical Embroidery published by the Crowood Press.
Teaching at the Stitch Sanctuary
What do you enjoy about teaching online?
Teaching online connects everyone around the world, and enables everyone to participate in a hand embroidery workshop regardless of location, ability and other commitments. It’s like every student is ‘sat on my lap’!
What do you think are the drawbacks of online learning and how do you overcome them as a teacher?
I’m not able to start a student with a few stitches in their fabric but I’m happy to demo as many times as the student requires, also it’s not as easy to see what they’re stitching so I rely on them sending good progress pics.
What would you say to someone thinking of booking onto a Stitch Sanctuary online class for the first time?
Just go for it; you won’t be disappointed. The tutors are all very experienced and are happy to answer all your questions.
